About

The salt meadows

In 1934, the salt meadows at Lille Vejle Å were designated as conservation area to preserve the sea view from the coastal road. However, in the 1970s, it was decided to establish the beach park Køge Bugt Strandpark, and today Hundige Havn and the artificial islands with beaches are located behind the salt meadows designated as conservation area. The long islands along the shallow coastal water were formed as a natural process. However, nature received a helping hand when more than one million cubic metres of sand were pumped from the bay. The salt meadows behind the recreational areas are grazed by cows, and in this way they maintain the open nature. The area is home to the green toad which is an internationally protected species.
